In my work ‘Temple of awareness’ I explore the relationships between the physical and the spiritual.
The pineal gland, a tiny organ buried deep in the center of the brain, is the metaphysical link between both worlds and was the starting point fort his work. This organ produces and secretes the hormone melatonin. Melatonine is a hormone that helps regulate biological rhythms such as sleep and wake cycles. The secretion of melatonin is inhibited by light and triggered by darkness.
Outside the realm of science, the pineal gland is associated with the sixth chakra, called ajna or the “third eye” center located between your eyebrows.
Symbolically, the third eye represents union on the path to cosmic consciousness, divine wisdom, inner knowing, and intuition. This is the place where the ego is left behind and the concept of duality begins to unwind in order to embrace unity or the concept of oneness.
For Buddhists, the pineal is a symbol of spiritual awakening. In hinduism, the pineal is the seat of intuition and clairvoyance. For Taoists, the pineal is the mind’s eye or heavenly eye.
The deeper inspiration for the creation of this work relates to this powerful time during the pandemic in 2020.
People are used to focus on the external world, the world in which form and matter rule. But what happens if this external world suddenly no longer meets our expectations and desires? We want to regain control, we are going to resist, but we soon find out that this only leads to frustration and a feeling of dissatisfaction. We become aware that our happiness does not depend on the external material world. We do have control over our perception, how we experience and interact with the external world. And we understand that this is the time to shift the focus and go inwards. This is the time to learn about ourselves as a formless energy, to rediscover our connection with life, to reconnect with the earth and the universe, this is the time we grow collective loving awareness.
My intention is to form a non-verbal connection on this important issue and to inspire the viewer to focus, ‘to be’ insteed of ‘to do’.
The kinetic effect, created by focusing on the pupil of the eye, will produce a hypnotic effect. It will capture our focus and allow us to consist of pure consciousness for a moment.
